get him to commit

The biggest signs he wants to marry you!

When you’re fully in love with somebody, it comes as no surprise that you would picture a future together. You imagine getting married and building a home and a family with this person. So how do you know if your significant other is having the same type of thoughts about you? What are the signs he wants to marry you? Is there any way to know for sure?

Many people have asked me about this topic so I’ve been feeling inspired to write an article on it for you. There are some things to keep an eye out for that will serve as indicators, so I will be going over those in this article.

I will also be going over what to do to increase the odds of making him want to get married to you, so even if you don’t spot the signs I outline in this article, there is no need to worry.

Finding the person you want to marry is one of the most beautiful things we experience in life, and it requires laying out a proper foundation. So let’s take a look at the signs he wants to marry you and how to show him that you’re The One for him!

How to spot the signs he wants to marry you

I was working with a client of mine the other day, Aisling, who had come to me a few months back in order to help her work on the communication issues she was facing in her relationship.

She and her boyfriend, Jonathan, were having trouble developing proper communication and it was creating so much tension in the relationship that she was starting to worry about losing him forever.

We worked together on establishing proper communication between them and laying out a solid foundation in the relationship. If you’d like to learn more about the techniques for making a relationship strong, I encourage you to click here.

As time went on, she started to sense a positive shift in her relationship. They were able to get back on the same page and feel closer than ever, while still living their independent lives. Then she told me about the moment when she started to sense that he was ready.

They were at a birthday party for her little cousin when one of her aunts came over to talk to her and Jonathan. They were talking about how beautiful Aisling’s brother’s wedding was the year before. “So,” said the aunt, “When are YOU two going to tie the knot?”

Aisling was expecting Jonathan to laugh nervously and gently switch topics, but instead, he smiled, looked at Aisling, then back at her aunt and responded with, “You’ll be the first to know.”

It was subtle, but Aisling recognized that he wasn’t scoffing at the idea of marrying her and the thought of it did not make him uncomfortable. So this brings us to my first sign that he wants to marry you.

Signs he wants to marry you psychology: The topic doesn’t make him uncomfortable

I would say that the first sign that your boyfriend wants to marry you is if he doesn’t balk or get uncomfortable when the topic of marriage comes up in conversation.

If whenever the word “marriage’ is spoken, your boyfriend starts to laugh nervously or waste no time before he tries to find a new topic, chances are that he’s not ready. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he doesn’t want to marry you – it could be that he’s just not ready to be thinking about making big steps like that.

On the other hand, if he reacts like Jonathan did in the story I shared with you above, or if he says things like, “Oh, it won’t be too long” then it’s pretty clear that he’s already thinking about marrying you at some point, whether that’s very soon or in a few years.

signs he wants to marry you

Signs he wants to marry you soon: He brings up the topic of marriage

This goes without saying, but if your significant other talks to you about marriage, then he’s definitely not shying away from the topic. For example, if you notice that he’s bringing it up and feeling out how you feel about it, or if he’s exploring what kind of ring or what kind of wedding you’re dreaming of, he might be gathering intel!

So pay attention to whether or not he asks you questions about your wedding preferences, whether or not he shies away from the topic or if he’s the one to bring it up. A man who starts talking to you about the topic of marriage and weddings is not one who’s shying away from potentially marrying you.

Signs he wants to marry you soon: He asks your friends about your marriage preferences

Did you find out that your boyfriend asked your best friend about what kind of rings you like? Well, that’s a pretty clear sign he wants to marry you one day, and I think it’s safe to say that that day might not be so far away.

A man will go out of his way to find out what you would want the most when he’s ready to start making concrete moves. So pay attention to whether or not he’s asked your closest friends for information, whether he’s asked your parents, your siblings, or anyone that knows you really well.

I think I want to marry you: The future

Another sign to keep a lookout for is when your man sees you in his future. Does he talk about making future plans with you like big trips, moving cities, or moving in together?

Plans like this typically signify that someone sees the relationship continuing to grow and become stronger, and getting married usually goes hand in hand with that.

So perhaps he isn’t explicitly thinking that he’s going to propose on one specific date, but the fact that he sees you in his future is a very good thing. The more he sees you in his future, the higher the chances of him proposing to you one day are.

What makes a man fall in love and commit: The real answer!

Signs a man wants to be with you for the rest of his life

One of he biggest signs that he wants to marry you is when he talks about children with you.

Does he talk about how many kids he wants? What kind of names you like? What kind of childhood he would like for your kids? The more he talks about things of this nature with you and the more he wants to know about how you feel about it all, the more likely it is that he’s thinking about marrying you one day.

A guy would not talk to you about marriage and children if he knew in his heart of hearts that he didn’t want that with you.

He wants to introduce you to his loved ones

Does your boyfriend go out of his way to introduce you to his friends and his family? Have you heard that he talks about you a lot to them?

Generally speaking, men don’t introduce women to the people they care about most if they don’t view the relationship as something serious. If you’re regularly having dinners with his parents and you’ve already developed a close relationship with them, then chances are even higher that he wants to marry you.

Also pay attention to how eager he is to meet your family and your loved ones. If you can tell that this is important to him, then you are also very important to him. These are all part of the foundation that makes up a relationship that is only going to get stronger with time.

He prioritizes you every day

When people are looking for signs that their significant other wants to marry them, I tell them to keep an eye on how much of a priority they are in their partner’s life.

Does your man prioritize you and regularly make himself available to you? Does he give you a lot of his time and attention, even when he’s stressed with other things going on in his life?

Does he value your opinion and does he share his interests with you? Does he go out of his way to meet your spoken AND unspoken needs? Is he selfless and is he consistently doing little things to show you how much he cares?

Actions really do speak louder than words, so if you see that your boyfriend is really making an effort to make you feel loved and cherished, chances are that he sees you as his wife one day.

How to stop being codependent: The key!

He doesn’t chase other women

This one should be a no-brainer but it’s worth mentioning. If your guy is not chasing other women, if he’s faithful to you, and if your relationship is not something he hides from people, then it’s serious.

On the other hand, if he’s still “on the prowl” and he doesn’t want to be exclusive with you or put labels on your relationship, then he isn’t ready to think about marriage. A man who’s reading for marriage isn’t going to be trying to keep his options open!

How long does it take a man to know he wants to marry you and how to increase the odds?

If you’ve been reading the signs I went over above and they haven’t been resonating with you and your relationship, I don’t want you to panic. It typically takes men a bit longer to be ready for marriage than it takes women, and this is all perfectly natural. The worst thing you could do is to put pressure on your man if he doesn’t seem to be ready to think about marrying you. Men place high value on their independence and if they feel like they’re being forced to give it up, they will be very likely to pull away.

So instead of doing anything that would make him feel pressured, it is better to create an environment in your relationship that makes him feel excited and inspired to be with you. This means that you both need to be living fulfilling lives, and it’s important to guard your relationship against emotional dependency. Emotional dependency is one of the biggest relationship killers that exist.

I encourage you to therefore make sure that you’re living a life that you’re genuinely proud of. Devote time to your passions and your hobbies, focus on your physical and emotional health through exercise and mediation, spend time with friends and family members that bring you joy. Give yourself personal and professional goals to work towards on a daily basis, and you’ll start to feel so happy in your own life, that your boyfriend is going to want to play a greater role in all of it. 1. Wow….. This is very very educative and I have learn a lot. Thanks so much God bless you for sharing

  2. My daughter is dating a guy 2 years and we haven’t met his parents. He dated someone else 5 years. Is he just a serial long term dater ? He didn’t call our daughter in a horrible hurricane to see if she was ok ? He also just moved into an apartment with another guy and two girls out of his parents place. He didn’t care to see her the last two days she was off and encouraged her to hang out with a platonic guy friend. This boyfriend works as a therapist. Should she move on ?

    1. Hi JoAnne, there are so many details to each story and we would be happy to help guide your daughter. Please don’t hesitate to have her reach out so that we can ask her specific situations about the relationship and define the ideal action plan. To work with us, just click here.

  3. The boyfriend and I are in our early 60s. I am a widow and he has never married. Obviously, we dont discuss having children. I can’t meet his parents (deceased). What are the signs for our age group and how are they different?

    1. Hi Joy, the signs remain more or less the same regardless of age. We wish you great success in your relationship!

  4. If he completely shuts down when an issue arises, or he deflects the blame onto you and maybe threatens to break up with you, it’s a big sign he’s not ready to get married.
